In Texas, three Junior ROTC students from Brackenridge High School quickly responded after a school resource officer at Marble Falls High School accidentally discharged his firearm, injuring himself in the leg. The incident occurred just before 6 p.m. near the school’s visitor parking lot.
High School Students Apply Tourniquet and Call for Help
Jonathon Huerta, Ethan, and Josiah, all ROTC students aged 14 to 17, were nearby when they heard the officer’s call for help. “We asked if he was OK, and he told us he’d been shot,” Josiah recounted. Despite their nerves, the teens managed to apply a tourniquet to the officer’s leg to slow the bleeding. After a brief 911 call, emergency services arrived quickly, and the officer was airlifted to a hospital.
Students Stress Importance of First Aid Training
The students believe this situation highlights the need for more first aid education in schools. Josiah noted, “Basic first aid skills should be taught to students from middle school through high school.”
