SSI Beneficiaries Set to Receive Increased Payments in 2024

Millions of Americans who rely on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are in for some good news. According to the Social Security Administration (SSA), beneficiaries who qualify for the SSI program will see an official increase in their payments in the coming months.

This financial assistance program is designed to support low-income seniors over 65, disabled individuals, and children with specific financial needs. In total, $1.1 million will be distributed, boosting SSI payments for eligible recipients over the next three to six months.

How the 2024 SSI Payment Increase Will Impact Beneficiaries

Not everyone will qualify for the increase, though. The SSA states that only 400 beneficiaries—those unable to work due to terminal illness—will receive the added funds. Conditions such as chronic heart failure, kidney disease, leukemia, and other severe illnesses are among those that qualify.

These recipients experienced underpayment during the time between submitting their SSI application and receiving approval.

While the increase is intended to address past shortfalls, those who don’t qualify for this additional payment will continue receiving their regular monthly checks. To learn more about the SSI payment increase and eligibility requirements, visit the Social Security Administration.

SSI checks are typically delivered on the first of each month, but dates can shift depending on weekends and holidays. For example, due to the New Year’s holiday, December’s payments will be issued on December 31, 2024. The SSA is also expanding its online benefits application system, aiming to fully digitize the process by the end of 2025, making it easier for new applicants to access SSI benefits.
