Louis man who lost legs after Chicago car crash is grateful to be alive

ST. LOUIS-A man in St. Louis is being treated at a Chicago hospital. Louis after losing both his legs when he was hit by a car while walking along the Magnificent Mile.

Bryce Summary and his wife Amy were in “Windy City” for a work conference. They were walking towards dinner when the unthinkable happened.

“I just heard my husband say,‘ Look at that, ’and he pushed me,” Amy told FOX 2. “I looked to my left, and I saw a white SUV coming toward us. . I expected him to be behind me, but every time I turned around, he was gone. ”

Police said the driver of the white Mercedes tried to run into a traffic stop, was hit by another car, and headed around the corner of Michigan and Ohio. Bryce was hit and trapped underneath.

“I just kept his head and kept telling him, ‘You have to stay with me. Squeeze my hand and let me know you’re still there. I need you. Our children need you. Just stay with us, ‘”Amy recalls.

Bryce survived, but 12 days have passed. He has already undergone six lengthy surgeries, including two leg amputations. He will go for a seventh operation on Wednesday. The couple remained strong for each other and their two sons at home.

“We are both just so thankful that we are both alive and that we survived the accident. We’re just trying to look ahead, ”Amy said.

On the couple’s return to St. Charles, Bryce plans to continue teaching their two sons t-ball and soccer, continuing to run every day and not miss a single step.

“It was a huge temporary failure, but it wasn’t the end of the book. It’s just a new chapter, ”said Amy.

The Summary family started a GoFundMe page to help pay for medical bills, housing, clothing, and other expenses. The page raised over $ 21,000.
