A bus driver in Galveston County has been charged after being accused of putting his hands on an 11-year-old boy during a dispute over a bag of chips. The incident left Lindsey Wynne, the boy’s mother, outraged and seeking answers.
According to Wynne, her son, Owen Lacy, called her in tears, explaining that he had been kicked off the school bus shortly after boarding. The incident occurred when Owen was holding a phone and a bag of chips as he got on the bus.
He reportedly hadn’t had a chance to put the items in his bag yet. Owen told his mother that the driver immediately confronted him, stating food was not allowed on the bus. The boy responded that he intended to put the chips away, but the driver allegedly grabbed his wrist and forcefully threw the chips away.
The driver then asked Owen if he wanted to go home, and when the boy agreed, he was dropped off near Jackson Road, away from his regular stop.
Wynne only became aware of the situation when a neighbor posted about it on Facebook, mentioning they had seen Owen being dropped off in the area. Worried about the neighborhood’s safety, she explained, “It’s not a safe place, and there are known predators living nearby.”
Dickinson ISD, the district responsible for the bus service, released a statement confirming they are fully cooperating with the Galveston County Sheriff’s Department in the investigation. “The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority,” said Tammy Dowdy, the district’s Director of Communications.
